How much does it cost to design a product?

The cost of designing a product depends on the product. Three things matter most: how complex it is, whether it needs special manufacturing processes and whether it needs electronic design.

At Bates Product Design we split projects into four separately payable phases, so you can spread and control the cost as you go, allowing for funding to be gained as you develop the product.

What decides the cost

  1. Complexity. A simple one-part product needs far less design than one with many moving parts

  2. Special manufacturing processes. Some processes need more design work and testing.

  3. Electronics. Circuit boards, sensors and software add design and testing.

At Bates Product Design, full product development from initial concept into production start from around £7500 and can go up to £30,000. This is highly dependent on the project complexity, length and requirements.

To get a better understanding of your project costs, book in a FREE project consultation, where we can produce a project brief, cost breakdown and project viability check, before you invest your time and money.

Low risk 4 phase approach

Bates Product Design work on a 4 phase approach, allowing you to split the project into 4 separate phases, each with defined deliverables and key steps to get your product to market. This allows the project cost to be split across the 4 phases rather than needed upfront, allowing you to raise funding as we design your product.

The 4 phases are as follows:

01. Concept Design

Turn your idea into a clear design direction. We explore concepts, sketch ideas and develop initial designs to find the right solution for your product.

02. Detail Design & Engineering

Transform the chosen concept into a fully engineered 3D CAD model, with detailed components and technical drawings ready for prototyping and manufacture.

03. Prototyping

Bring your design to life with physical prototypes. Test functionality, refine the design and identify improvements before committing to production.

04. Production

Take your proven design to market. We support manufacturing preparation, supplier coordination and production to help get your finished product into customers' hands.

Production Costs

Manufacturing costs depend on your product's design, materials, complexity and the number of units you need. Processes such as injection moulding require upfront investment in tooling, which can make them more suitable for larger production runs.

We work with a network of trusted suppliers across the UK and globally to compare manufacturing options and costs for each project. For smaller quantities, we can often manufacture batches in-house, helping reduce minimum order quantities and avoid expensive tooling.

Our goal is to find the right manufacturing solution for your product, balancing quality, budget and production volume to make your idea commercially viable.
